Strawberries and Cream

Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries are eaten during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, together with 7,000 litres of cream. The popularity of serving strawberries with cream is possibly as old as the event itself. The club held its first tennis championships in 1877. They were witnessed by a few hundred spectators in what is described as a “garden party atmosphere.” Today, the Wimbledon championships are attended by more than 500,000 people as well as carried to millions around the world through mass media and the Internet.

Blackfriars has successfully captured the ‘taste of Wimbledon’ in the Strawberry Fields Flapjack – a delicious blend of strawberries and cream that taste of summer. So this month, to celebrate the Wimbledon season, why not treat yourself to a box of Strawberry Fields Flapjacks to enjoy whilst watching the game?

Go Murray, Go!

Here are is a fact that you might not have known about coffee to consider as you enjoy your coffee and flapjack this morning.  Most of the world’s coffee is still picked by hand, one bean at a time. An experienced coffee picker can pick about 7 baskets of coffee beans a day, each weighing 50-100 kg. The picker will be paid between $2 and $10 per basket of coffee cherries. Once the coffee cherries are dried and roasted, the coffee beans from that basket will sell for about $110.
